General liability

General liability for plumbers in San Diego County.

General liability responds to injury or property damage a plumbing contractor causes to someone else. A general contractor often asks for a certificate before the plumber can start. The Contractors State License Board does not require general liability for every license. An LLC license does. Mainline Insurance Services places general liability from 779 3rd Avenue, Chula Vista.

What the jobsite is asking for.

These words are endorsement requests. The policy has to allow them. Paste the wording the general contractor sent. Do not shorten it.

  • Additional insured. The general contractor or the property owner is added to the plumber's liability policy for that job.
  • Primary and noncontributory. The request asks the plumber's policy to respond first, without looking to the holder's policy to share the loss.
  • Waiver of subrogation. The insurer is asked to waive its right to recover from the holder.

The limits belong on the job's insurance requirements. This page does not choose a limit.

LLC licenses have a CSLB filing.

CSLB requires liability insurance for an LLC contractor license. The aggregate limit is at least $1 million when five or fewer people are listed as personnel of record, plus $100,000 for each additional person, and it is not required to exceed $5 million. That rule is Business and Professions Code section 7071.19.

Common questions

Does California require every plumber to carry general liability?

No. CSLB does not require it for every license. An LLC license has to file liability insurance. A general contractor can still refuse the job without a certificate.

Which liability limits should a plumber carry?

Send the limits written on the job. This page does not pick a limit or a price.
